books annotation

First before starting any thing I'm not an expert in books annotation, I started it recently and this is what I learnt in the meanwhile, so these information and tips may not be the best and most advanced ones out there.

What is books annotation as I understand it?
Books annotation is making a book you read personal to you by adding your own notes and comments to whatever line that sparks a feeling within you.

Tools you may need:
You can find these tools in any stationary store, or you may even have them in your own stationary.
the tools are:

  • Pencil or pen .

  • Highlighters.

  • Books-post-it flags.

You don't have to have them all, a pen or pencil maybe enough, or even one of the other tools, and also you can be creative and use a completely another tool.

How do people annotate their books as I notice them?

As they read they underline what sparks any feeling within them, they may highlight or stamp a book-post-it flag beside that line. They may distinguish the feelings by colors, they can make a key in which each color is standing for a specific feeling as: joy, sadness, love or anger in the front white page of the book or a different sheet of paper. Some people don't prefer to write in their own books so they write these annotations in a separate sheet of paper or notebook, but of course this will take a longer time, and somehow the experience will be less enjoyable I believe.
People also add a summary to the book or a summary for each chapter, and they also write the main characters and the main information about them. You can be creative and do whatever you want to add you own sense to your book copy.

How do I annotate?

First to let it clear I use electronic books so I need to have an app that allows me to annotate and add to my book copy to make it personalized for me.

  • I read through the book and as I'm learning English I highlight every word that I don't understand.
  • I also highlight any quote or sentence that sparks an aha moment within me.
  • And also every time I feel as I have a comment or note response to the author or question I want to add to any line I add it using a note adding option.

The app that I'm using is called Anybooks, you can find it here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=co.anybooks. I use it in my Android phone, so I'm not sure if it is available for other devices. But you can find other apps to help you annotate to some degree if you're reading an e-book I believe. Let me know if you find any app as I love to try different apps that may provide more different features.

Annotation benefits:
  1. Help you to engage in the process of reading which will enhance your ability to understand and recall the information in the book.
  2. Give you an enjoyable time reading.
  3. A way of keeping notes and memories to return to it later.
  4. It is going to help you if you are studying a book by summarizing it and getting the key information.
  5. Make the book copy personalized to you.
